Ending a 16-year hiatus in Puerto Princesa and across Palawan, two short plays produced by the Palawan State University Communication Society and the College of Arts and Humanities recently brought live theater back to the stage. Staged in time for the History Month celebration, this cultural revival was produced by the City Government of Puerto Princesa through the City Tourism – Culture and Arts Program, in collaboration with the Ilig Palaweño Creative Community.

The production opens with “Ang Baruto-Baruto,” a poignant drama centering on a fisherman and his wife battling survival at sea. The story highlights the immense sacrifices of earning a living in the West Philippine Sea to fund medical treatment for their ailing daughter. The performance features a promising cast led by Lorraine Jade Espia, who delivers a captivating portrayal of the resilient wife and mother, Liway. Beside her, Randy Vigonte Jr. plays Ruding, a steadfast man driven by principle. The ensemble is completed by Leigh Owey Jalandoon as Doday, Justen Nicole Amat as Magda, and Micah Seranio as Pasing.

In contrast, the second play, “Kiaruwa’ (A Life Force),” is a vibrant musical celebrating the culture of the Batak—an indigenous tribe of Puerto Princesa. Rich in environmental themes and traditional heritage, the story unfolds around the search for the tribe’s next babaylan (spiritual leader). The musical features performances by Justine Vicente as Agu, Jade Gutierrez as Dayang, Alma Jean Labunos as Ina/Baba Duma, Vince Nover Bandibad as Kanang-Kamay, and Gisha Francine Sulayao as Diwatang Batungbayani.

The success of the production was made possible by a dedicated creative and technical team under the overall direction of Ralph Pulanco. Technical creative consultation for stage performance was provided by Sanilyn Gianan, with Santa Niña Arquisola serving as Production Manager. Kerwin Sagun led stage production, creatives, props, and design, while Jo Anne Kadusale and Jazzmin Espanto served as Stage Managers. The technical elements were brought to life by Technical and Sound Director Japhet Malibiran, Lighting Designer Martchie Sumayang, and Costume and Make-Up Artists Jeric Bagalay and Hazel Mae Tacayan. The Banwa Dance And Arts along with The Puerto Princesa City Choir also appeared in the show.

Perform last Aug 17 and 18 at the PALSU Ampitheater in Tiniguiban Campus.
